The official blueprint

Most of the test lives in two subjects.

Hair & Scalp Care and Infection Control account for 68% of the scored exam. That does not make the other subjects disposable. It does mean a useful plan should reflect the real weighting instead of treating every chapter equally.

What to study first

Start with evidence, not anxiety.

The fastest useful plan depends on what you know, what you only recognize, what you guess correctly, and which question wording changes your answer.

01 · DIAGNOSE

Find the point leak.

Sample every scored subject in the official proportions. A correct guess and a confident correct answer should not be treated as the same evidence.

02 · PRIORITIZE

Protect the high-weight subjects.

Hair and infection control deserve substantial attention, but your actual misses decide where the first focused round begins.

03 · PROVE

Answer it in a fresh form.

Learning is more than recognizing the explanation you just saw. Apply the same rule to a new salon situation and revisit it later.

From eligibility to exam day

How the Texas process works.

BEFORE SCHEDULING

Wait for exam eligibility.

After the required program hours are reported, TDLR sends eligibility to PSI. TDLR says to allow 24–48 hours for eligibility to generate.

SCHEDULING

Follow the PSI notice.

PSI emails eligible candidates with registration and scheduling instructions. Fees, identification rules, locations, and rescheduling policies belong in the current bulletin—not in memory.

IF YOU NEED A RETAKE

Use the result.

Eligibility remains valid for five years and attempts are not capped during that period, but each attempt has a separate fee. A failed attempt must clear the systems before another can be scheduled.

Straight answers

Texas written-exam FAQ.

How many questions are on the written exam?

The current bulletin specifies 100 scored questions and 10 unscored questions. You will not be told which ten are unscored, so answer every question as if it counts.

How much time do I get?

You receive 120 minutes for the scored exam and 10 additional minutes for the unscored questions: 130 minutes total.

What score do I need to pass?

The current published passing score is 70%. Board Boss uses a higher practice target because barely clearing a familiar practice set is weak evidence of readiness.

What should I bring on test day?

Read the current PSI bulletin before your appointment and follow its identification and check-in instructions exactly. Your identification information must match the information provided to TDLR. Policies can change, so use the bulletin rather than an old checklist.

Is the practical exam included?

No. This guide and Board Boss currently focus on the Texas Cosmetology Operator written licensing exam.

Are Board Boss questions taken from the real exam?

No. Board Boss uses original questions aligned to the published outline and grounded in cited regulatory or educational sources. It is independent and is not affiliated with TDLR or PSI.

Know where you stand.

A generic score tells you how many you got right. Board Boss uses correctness, certainty, timing, the official weighting, and prior score-report context to decide what deserves your time next.
